Hi! My name is Emily, and I just transferred to Bloomsburg in the fall. I started my college career at Luzerne County Community College, where I got my Associate's in Professional Writing. Here at Bloom, I decided to continue in that track by doing English with a focus on Professional Writing. I'm also a commuter student and live at home with my sister, two brothers, my parents, and seven cats. Yes, I love cats. Home, for me, is in Dallas. No, not Dallas, Texas. You'd be surprised how many people ask me that. Dallas, PA, is about an hour away from campus, in case you're wondering.
Reading and Writing
When I'm not on my hour-long commute or doing homework, I love to read and write in a variety of genres, though I tend to focus on fantasy when I write. However, when it comes to reading, I go all over the place. During our break, I read a whopping 28 books from all genres, including fantasy, romance, lit fic, memoirs, and manga. Among these was a book called When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi, and I would highly recommend it. It's one of those books that makes you question the meaning of life. I also love books that make you cry, and it certainly does that, too. I am forever amazed that words arranged on paper have the power to evoke a physical reaction from our bodies. Of course, if you don't like books that make you cry, this one is not for you. One of my favorite things to do is keep track of my reading in Goodreads. I've linked the website here.
Other Hobbies
When I'm not reading or writing stories, I do a lot of journaling. I take way too much pride in my collection of filled journals. When I say journaling, I do not mean the aesthetic kind. My kind of journaling is ranting to a piece of paper for hours via looped and messy handwriting. I also take care of my many houseplants, watch anime (especially One Piece and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End), play with my cats, or watch TedTalks. One of my favorite TedTalks is by speechwriter Simon Lancaster. He calls his talk "Speak Like a Leader," and it's all about the rhetoric of leadership.
Hi Emily!
ReplyDeleteI have five cats and think you can never have too many.
What was your favorite book/genre you read over the break? (I also love keeping track on Goodreads, the only way I remember what I've read.)
I find it so hard to pick favorites, but one of them was this book called "If Cats Disappeared From the World" by Genki Kawamura. It's one of those books that makes you question what sorts of things make life worth living and at what cost.
DeleteHi Emily,
ReplyDeleteI too love writing and journaling. Who or what made you want to do it as a career?
For me, there was never really anyone in my life that was into writing, but it was something I just did all the time. I guess what made me want to pursue it is that when you write or journal, the world becomes a lot more quiet, and things start making more sense. Something about it brings peace, and I want to live in that feeling.
DeleteThanks for sharing, Emily. I'm also a big user of Goodreads. I'm a little addicted to trying to achieve all the reading challenges. I listened to 'When Breath Becomes Air' last year - very moving.
