Tyler Harper- Introduction Blog
Hello everyone,
My name is Tyler Harper. I am 21 years old and a secondary education major, but also intend to graduate with an ESL certificate. Some hobbies of mine include studying Japanese, playing video games, and physically working out. I have lived in PA for most of my life, but also lived in Colorado, Georgia, and South Korea while serving in the military. A book that I recently read was "Babel" by Kuji Furumiya. It's an entertaining fantasy light-novel that incorporates an interesting approach to linguistics and communication.
I'm a pretty big anime fan, so I decided to link Crunchyroll's website. I'm always down for new anime, television, and movie recommendations, so please help my watchlist expand even more! Some of my favorite series include Fullmetal Alchemist and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. I'm also reading the manga for Frieren, so it's been a lot of fun seeing scenes I read become animated in the second season.Something I would recommend is studying a foreign language! It helps a lot with developing a deeper understanding of English, so I would advise anybody looking to teach or further study English to try. My understanding of grammatical and linguistic structures have exponentially improved after studying Japanese. I think Japanese is interesting because of how different the writing structure and syntax is from English. Not only that, but it's a great way of developing cultural awareness! Here is a video going over the basic structures of the hiragana writing structure.
Nice to see you again, Tyler!
ReplyDeleteHow did I not know you were into anime? That is awesome. I love meeting fellow anime fans, especially Frieren fans. I have been trying to get my brother to watch it since the show first came out, and the battle has thus far been fruitless, but I keep trying. I watched/read the entirely of One Piece for him, so I think he can at least watch Frieren for me.
Regarding Frieren, I haven't read any of the manga yet, but I want to! Is it as good as I hope?
Also, I love that you are learning Japanese. I tried learning it at one point, but life happened, and I pushed it aside. However, it's definitely something I want to get back to. After reading your notes on it, perhaps I'll pick it up again.
I hope you have a lovely semester!
Hey Tyler,
ReplyDeleteI did not know you were into anime either but that is awesome. I love anime and video games a lot. I also am a big Fullmetal Alchemist fan and it is in my top three. I really want to get into Frieren as well at some point. I watched the first episode and I enjoyed it so much. I also want to pick up learning Japanese again as well since me and boyfriend want to visit someday. He wants to join the military as well and he is hoping to be put in South Korea or Japan and I am sure he would love to hear your stories and experience with South Korea.
Hi Tyler,
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome that you're learning and studying different languages, I myself learned German back in high school. What kind of video games do you enjoy?
Hello Tyler, that's awesome that you're studying to become an English Major, I also really enjoy learning new languages and Japanese is a great language to learn!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Tyler. For a brief moment, I thought we might have read a book in common. 'Babel' by RF Kuang has been on a lot of best of books' lists in recent years. However, you were talking about a manga. I'd love to know whether the reading of manga helped you think about any of what we've discussed about reading.
